Favorites of 2011

Things have been slow at work lately and I'm getting ready for my trip to a friend's graduation. Sometimes, after I've finished a game/anime series/movie, I like to go to the TV Tropes page and see what everyone's saying about it. The past couple of days I've spent some time going back and looking at Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

I seriously loved that anime series when I watched it earlier this year. It had so many twists and was exceptionally dark for what I thought was just a regular magical girl show, but it all made sense and things just clicked together in an amazing way. Reliving the show now, I'm appreciating just how nicely things all fit together. I still need to do a proper re-watching, but the Tropes page has already helped point out things I missed the first time around.

Also, I checked the official site and apparently special edition Blu-Rays are coming out next year, and I am DEFINITELY picking those up! I don't understand why anime volumes are still being released two months apart, though...

I went to see Hugo in 3D over the weekend, and that really blew me away as well. It was a movie I didn't have a lot of excitement to see... I'd already gone to Muppets and The Descendants, both movies I was really eager to see, but with Hugo I only had a passing interest and the knowledge that it was heavily positively reviewed. So when I went to see it, it was more of a "I GUESS I'll go see it..." rather than "Oh boy! I can't wait to see it!"

But boy, the reviews were right. I really loved it. The problem with this movie is that it's hard to sell you on it without giving too much away. You can say, "Well, Hugo is trying to fix this robot", and it's like, "That's kinda interesting? I guess?" but it turns out to be a lot more than that.

Also, the 3D was not only some of the best I've seen, but I also felt like it worked with the story in its own little way. Not like the film would be ruined if you didn't see it in 3D... but it felt like it definitely adds something. But yeah, it just plain looks cool too. I think they put it to great use here.

But yeah... I feel like I can put down Madoka and Hugo as my favorites of the year. For video games, I'd have to go with Zelda: Skyward Sword, which I've been enjoying a lot lately. Although it's true I haven't played many of the other new releases this year... Skyward Sword is just something else I feel came together very nicely. I think it's my new favorite Zelda in the series, from the Wii controls to the setting and the general gameplay. Just really loving it!
