It's a new year, and a new year means INCOME TAXES! I look forward to filing my income taxes because I usually get a decent refund. Whatever the reasons behind it, I find less and less taxes being taken out from my paycheck under Obama. Originally, I was planning on using whatever refund I might get to do a big home improvement project, but with the way things are looking, I may be better off taking care of a bunch of little things I never did manage to address last year.

-Still no computer desk. Gotten lots of recommendations from friends, so now I need to figure out what I want and look into getting something. Doing all my computer stuff on the floor gets a little old after a while...
-DVD shelves. Again, have lots of possibilities... I may look for a large shelf for the living room, for movies and games, but I also need some short shelves for the "bonus room" with the oddly low ceiling. Those will be good for storing manga, better than regular bookshelves for regular-size books.
-Was thinking of getting a rug for the living room. But I've decided maybe it would be better to just get carpet... it seems like there used to be carpet here, once upon a time. Not too crazy about the current look of a finished garage floor.
-Waiting on the new version of Windows Home Server to come out later this year. I was trying out the public beta ("Vail") until it expired, and I really grew to like it. But right now, I've got no server, and it seems stupid to get something an older version of Home Server in the meantime... It was fun for streaming movies and stuff around the house and over the Internet. Currently trying to organize my media so it'll be ready once the new home server is ready...
-Want a cheap no-frills TV for the second bedroom. I find myself sleeping there more often than the main bedroom, and it'll be nice to have something there. Did some quick looking around, and the prices don't seem too bad...
-Paint the bathroom?
-Paint the office?

Things I was glad I DID get done...

-TV is finally fixed for good. A Vizio technician actually came out and fixed it. I'm annoyed it had to come to this, and it seems like this particular model has a lot of problems like this. But I was so in love with the picture that I had to stick by it...
-Painted that second bedroom and got rid of the seafoam green.
-Got the toilet fixed.
-Got the over-the-range microwave.
-Got all the lawn mowers of various sizes I needed.

It was good I got some things done last year but it still feels like I was mostly stagnant. I just didn't have any spare money to do anything most of the time. But I think this year will prove better if I'm a little wiser with my money. Hopefully I can keep moving forward, and with a bit more momentum.

For DVD shelves, I find that it's best to go with actual bookshelves. Especially if you still have a lot of DVDs, games, Blu-Rays, and the like. The DVD-only shelves generally hold a lot less, are much flimsier, and can't be used to hold anything else should you need the space later.

But as long as you're trying to get something productive done (something that also improves on the value of the house), you're not stagnating at all. Good luck!

Hm, that's true... I had regular bookshelves before and they were pretty good all-around. It was just annoying that, even with adjustable shelves, there was always so much wasted vertical space! Guess I'll need to do a lot of shopping around.

I remember these as being medium-hearty, and also DVD-ish? http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/07305310

Getting stuff around the house done is always awesome! My landlord is doing some rewiring, so they wanted me to clear out my closet... I got rid of four trashbags of clothes and crap I'd been meaning to go through, just because of it. I'm always so lazy, especially being settled... but it's good to actually pay attention and get stuff done.

I love painting rooms. You should hire me to help out! Free vacation! ;D

Haha, nice! I've already tossed out a ton of stuff when I was packing to move here, and tossed out stuff on moving in as well... but there's still so much to go through. How did I get and keep so much crap?

Do you paint ceilings too? Somehow the last owners painted this one entire room this awful sort of Osh Kosh B'Gosh color. I think everyone in Texas must be colorblind.

Good to hear school is going well!

Yeah, I think so far I've only gotten one of my forms, so I guess I still have a while to wait before I can work on my taxes. But yeah, it is more of a pain the year you move! Hope it goes smoothly for you this year!
